Chapter 6: Modernism
The Empire State Building
Today the Empire State Building is just one of many high-rise skyscrapers on the Manhattan skyline.
Completed in 1931 during the early years of the Depression, however, it was a giant among dwarves. Built in the Art Deco style of architecture, the Empire State building with its 102 stories was the tallest building in the world from 1931 to 1972 when the Twin Towers were built.
