Activity p. 106: Gin Lane vs. Beer Street

Hogarth’s engraving Gin Lane (see page 105) was originally printed as part of a pair. The other picture is entitled Beer Street and shows a very different scene. Unlike gin, beer was regarded as a healthy drink, both for the individual and for society as a whole, and Beer Street presents an idealised picture of city life.

Exercise

Find the picture on the website below and compare it to Gin Lane. What are the parallels and contrasts? Prepare to present your findings to the class.
