Chapter 2: The Renaissance and Shakespeare

Kirby Hall

Copyright: The Bridgeman Art Library

Completed in 1590, Kirby Hall in Northamptonshire was conceived as a very grand Elizabethan house. With its archways, high chimneys, its elaborate gardens and avenues of trees, it was inspired by French architectural styles.

In the 1700s the owners fell on hard times and it was left largely unoccupied. Today the house is partly a ruin.
